BKR Book Review: Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett

Simone Garcia-Hampton is starting the upcoming school year at a new school.  She is a theatre nerd who loves directing, but she has a secret that she cannot share with anyone; Simone has HIV.  In the beginning of the year, her life was good. Simone was assistant director of the school play, she had two amazing best friends, and she even started to date Miles, the dreamiest boy in school. However, things went downhill when she received a disturbing anonymous note threatening to expose her condition to Miles and everyone else going to their school! Although Simone was not exactly sure what to do, this story showcases how she does her best to protect herself, her peace, and those she loves.

Full Disclosure is a book that once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down!  The story was so enthralling and Simone is such a strong, independent, female lead.  Her character illustrated that it is okay to share your emotions with others, even in tough situations.  Simone’s non-traditional family dynamic adds another interesting aspect to the story. Her two fathers (Pops being African American and Dad being Hispanic), demonstrate a healthy relationship between two parents as individuals and as a unit.  They are respectful and trusting of Simone but show authority when she needs guidance in the right direction. Simone and Miles’ relationship is also a great example of how teenagers should treat each other today. Miles, despite his urges as a teenage boy, respects Simone’s body and genuinely cares about her feelings and emotions.  Full Disclosure has several mature scenes, with the targeted audience for the book being teenagers, but it is a great read for adults too! I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in reading about a realistic experience from a teenager’s perspective. The diversity of the characters and the importance of the circumstances that Simone faces not only makes this an excellent book, but a one I would strongly recommend.

Meet the Reviewer!

Hi, I’m Ssanyu and I’m the founder of Brown Kids Read Inc! I started Brown Kids Read to motivate all children, but especially children of color to read more diverse literature. A few years ago I looked around at my peers and realized that they never really had the opportunity to read diverse literature like I did, so I decided to do something about it! Brown Kids Read is my way of making a difference by inspiring children to read more diverse books.

I’m an avid reader, a member of the New Jersey Orators, and a Junior Broadcaster with KiDz HuB Media Network. I’m also an honors student, dancer, and basketball player!
